Xcell-3 Microelectrode Amplifier
Catalog Number: 40-40-7
Single channel microelectrode amplifier for intracellular and extracellular recording features sharp, adjustable high and low cutoff filters, a notch (line) filter, as well as gain to x100,000. Also includes a unique artifact suppressor circuit, a switchable input to permit stimulation or lesion currents to the recording electrode, and a x10 DC output.
Provided with metal and glass microelectrode holders which plug into the high impedance probe built into a stereotaxic carrier.
The X-Cell 3 is our basic high impedance microelectrode amplifier featuring:
- DC and AC Outputs
- Probe Design puts first stage of Amplification at Microelectrode interface
- Input disconnect for high current injection
- Probe can operate in Differential or Single-Ended mode
- Convenient glass and metal microelectrode carriers included
- Wide gain range (10 - 100,000)
- Sharp (-12db/octave) high and low cutoff filters (custom options available)
- Line filters (50 or 60hz) provided
- Compact size with built-in power supply
- Artifact Suppressor circuit
The 40-40-7B X-Cell 3 microelectrode amplifier provides low noise, high impedance amplification versatility for both intracellular and extracellular applications. Convenient, plug-in holders for glass pipettes and metal microelectrodes are included with the system. The glass carrier accepts capillaries from .8-2mm; the metal carrier accepts rods to .6mm diameters.
Built-in low and high cut-off filters allow the investigator to reject signals outside the spectrum of interest. Additionally, a sharp notch filter can be introduced to virtually eliminate interference from power lines. The voltage gain of the system is adjustable from 10 to 100,000 in thirteen calibrated steps.
An internal 1 mV calibrator is available to ensure gain accuracy. Several features provide for an exceptional degree of "remote-control" away from the recording electrode preparation. Provided on the front panel of the amplifier are:
- Capacitance neutralization control
- A switch which electrically disconnects the microelectrode from the preamplifier input and connects it instead to a BNC connector (AUX), permitting the investigator to apply stimulation or lesion currents through the electrode or, using an FHC, Inc. 40-60-2B Impedance Check module, to measure the 1000 Hz impedance of the electrode.
- Offset and polarity controls are provided for both the DC (fixed gain = 10) and AC (variable gain and bandwidth) outputs.
- Two outputs (low gain DC and filtered, high gain AC) permit monitoring extracellular signals when approaching cells to attempt intracellular penetration. Conversely, monitoring the change in DC potential is a helpful indicator of an approaching cell for extracellular recording.
- External Shorting Plug on Probe allows for convenient change from Differential to Single-ended use through connection of the (-) input to common.
- A built-in Artifact Suppressor circuit uses a gated unity gain amplifier. Once initiated, the gating period is fixed by the Blocking Time setting. Additional trigger pulses occurring during the gating period will not affect the Blocking Time.
- The Xcell-3 is packaged in a modular cabinet which occupies only 5 1/2" x 7" when mounted in a standard rack or it can stand alone on the bench top. The probe is connected to the module by a 2 meter cable (other lengths can be specified). Probe dimensions are 1.5” x .9” x .6”.
- The system includes a built-in, line powered 115-230V, 50-60Hz supply.
