FHC Introduces the New microTargeting™ Star™ Drive
On September 18, 2009, leading neuroscience product manufacturer, FHC, received Food and Drug Administration clearance to market and sell its new microTargeting™ Star™ Drive in the United States. A CE mark awarded earlier in the month endorsed European promotion and sale. American and European FHC validation partners report a strong interest in the system for its smooth, stable and uncomplicated operation.
Many enhancements and improvements make the Star™ Drive an exciting technological advance since its predecessor, the microTargeting™ Drive. Lighter overall, with weight concentrated at its base, the Star™ Drive offers full control for precise microelectrode targeting during deep brain stimulation and recording procedures. Dr. Ronald F. Young of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA commented on the drive’s simplicity and precision, stating, “The new FHC microdrive is an easy to use, precise system for intraoperative microelectrode recording. It is simpler and easier to use than other systems and meets all of our needs for precision and reliability.” Other validation partners noted significantly quieter operation, experiencing a 50% reduction in microphonics while driving microelectrodes in array configurations. “Longer metal bushings in the new design are pivotal in realizing substantial noise reduction,” said Dorothée Sassé, FHC’s Product Manager for microTargeting™ Neural Devices.
The Star™ Drive is compatible with leading industry stereotactic systems through frame adapters secured in place with a new positive locking clamp. In response to neurosurgical demand for minimal assembly, the device includes a simplified two-tube array insertion system and combined automated washing, sterilization and storage in one SteriSuite case. The Star™ Drive’s ergonomic design with dual scales and easily accessible knob controls facilitate smooth operation.
Headquartered in Bowdoin, ME, FHC develops and manufactures products for functional neurosurgery in collaboration with its client and business partners. In operation nearly 40 years, FHC is dedicated to serving neuroscience with custom solutions for research and clinical applications.
